Foreword

Built to protect
what sustains us.

A short introduction to this handbook

Clean water, breathable air, and a stable climate are not accidents, they are engineered and managed. This handbook introduces a programme designed so that every course, from Semester 1 onward, produces something an environmental technology or sustainability team could actually use.

Over eight semesters you move from your first line of environmental data analysis to a full capstone project in the specialization you choose. You will not only study science; you will map pollution sources, model environmental data, assess sustainability practices, and design real interventions, a working portfolio that shows you can act, not just observe.

From Semester 6 onward, the curriculum splits into two specialization tracks: Environmental Technology and Sustainability Practice. Each track keeps the same foundation but points your final two years toward a distinct part of the environmental profession.

How to read this book. The first pages explain the shape of the programme and its two tracks. The second half walks through the curriculum semester by semester, each course paired with the tools you will learn, the concrete output you will build, and the career roles it prepares you for.

About the Programme

Why environmental engineering,
why now.

The discipline, the jobs, and why it matters here

Environmental engineering applies science and engineering principles to protect and improve the natural environment: clean water and air, safe waste management, and the systems that reduce and adapt to environmental damage. It sits at the intersection of engineering, public health, and sustainability.

What environmental engineers actually do

Graduates work as water and wastewater treatment engineers, air quality engineers, waste management engineers, environmental impact assessors, sustainability consultants, climate and environmental data analysts, and remediation engineers who clean up contaminated sites. Others move into ESG and corporate sustainability roles, environmental policy, or GIS-based environmental planning.

Why it matters in Indonesia

Indonesia faces pressing environmental challenges: water pollution and limited clean water access in many regions, a growing waste management crisis in fast-expanding cities, deforestation and biodiversity loss, and high vulnerability to climate change as the world's largest archipelago. At the same time, national regulation and global markets increasingly require companies to report on sustainability and environmental impact. Environmental engineers are the people equipped to solve these problems and meet these requirements, which keeps demand for this degree tied directly to the country's own environmental needs.

Specialization Tracks

The 144-credit total meets the standard minimum for an undergraduate engineering degree. Semester 1 carries 18 credits, Semesters 2 through 6 carry 20 credits each, Semester 7 carries 18 credits, and the Semester 8 capstone carries 8 credits.

Starting in Semester 5, students choose one of two specialization tracks: Environmental Technology and Sustainability Practice. Each track shares the same foundation built in Semesters 1 through 5, then points the final semesters toward a distinct professional path.

The Arc of Eight Semesters

Each term is defined by a single verb, a level of mastery to reach before moving on. Skill is layered, not rushed.
